This Paragraph 79 concept design was developed for a site within the Village of Shawford, near Winchester, on a steep site overlooking the River Itchen.
Much of its contemporary design language and layout is drawn from the proposed site’s steep gradient, and in respect of its leafy, rural location.
The slope of the site has been utilised to completely conceal the lower ground storey of the new dwelling. This combined with the proposed green roofs is to help lower the ‘perceived’ mass of the building and allow it to blend into the tree-lined surroundings.
Materials were also selected to complement the rural nature of the site. The white render was proposed to deliver a lightweight feel to the dwelling with a nod to the surrounding chalk downland. A green zinc standing seam roof was suggested to not only reflect the leafy surrounds but to also deliver a material representation of the agricultural units typically found within the surrounding countryside.
The lightweight appearance was further amplified by large sections of glazing that are intended to reflect nearby mature trees and give an impression of weightlessness, the roof floating just above the white external walls. This roof is proposed as double-pitched, to create a low ridge height, while still reflecting a ‘traditional’ form, representative of the local vernacular.
