Further to the main entrance staircase to the White Tower we have also designed and overseen the refurbishment of the spiral exit stair contained within the Flamsteed turret of the White Tower.
Due to the high volume of visitors to the Tower (in the order of 1.5 million per year) the current protective timber lining had become worn out.
The brief from Historic Royal Palaces required an ingenious solution to protect the underlying Norman stone steps and to cater for visitor impact. To this end, Radley House designed a bespoke metal framework made up of standardised parts to act as a carrier system and be concealed beneath new oak joinery. Each step had to be individually templated to suit the profile of the turret stonework.
