Works at the Flamsteed Tower are now complete and the exit stair has been re-opened for the public.
In the end, the lining for each step of the Norman spiral staircase had to be individually constructed to suit the profile of the curved stone treads and risers. This included a bespoke metal frame carrier and separation membranes concealed beneath oak joinery and bronze anti-slip nosing’s.
It is hoped that the new linings will last for another 40 years, plus!
The photos were kindly provided by Historic Royal Palaces and will feature on a future project page detailing its development, so please stay tuned….
